What is Phlebotomy?

Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood from a patient for various purposes, such as diagnostic testing, blood donation, or therapeutic procedures. A healthcare professional who performs phlebotomy is known as a phlebotomist.

The process typically involves the following steps:

1. Preparation: The phlebotomist prepares the necessary equipment, including needles, collection tubes, and antiseptic wipes. The patient may also be asked to provide information about their medical history or any medications they are taking.

2. Site Selection: The phlebotomist selects an appropriate site on the patient’s arm or hand, usually a vein that is easily accessible.

3. Cleaning: The selected site is cleaned with an antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection.

4. Blood Collection: A needle is inserted into the vein to collect blood into tubes. The phlebotomist may use a vacuum-sealed collection system to facilitate this process.

5. Post-Collection Care: Once the blood is collected, the needle is removed, and pressure is applied to the site to stop any bleeding. A bandage may be applied afterward.

Phlebotomy is commonly used for laboratory tests, such as blood counts, metabolic panels, and blood type testing, among others. It is a critical skill in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.
